The starting point for Julie Hayward's work is always a drawing. Science fiction-like objects are developed from this in various media, which deliberately evoke conflicting feelings. Motifs, images or emotions from the area of ??the subconscious thus become a concrete form. The sculptures have both a mechanical and an organic aspect, sometimes reminiscent of machines that could be in motion and were only stopped for a moment. A lot is clear and yet a little frightening, remains vague. The exhibition What could make me feel this way includes three large-format sculptures, drawings, models and photographs that address existential issues and “instigate a skeptical, if not entirely hopeless, view of the precarious present-day situation.” (Thomas Miessgang). Staying in balance thus becomes a balancing act, which is explored throughout the installation.
“... The abyss that opens up in Hayward's sculptures is brought into line with a psychological parallel world in a Freudian manner, in which the uncanny is coupled with feelings of everyday life and is humorously reflected in an artistically negotiated formal language.” (Walter Seidl)
