Ich darf Sie zu dieser im wahrsten Sinn „musealen Ausstellung ON AND ON“ von AG
begrüssen, da sämtliche hier präsentierten Arbeiten ua heuer in AG´s grosser
Personale SAFE AND SOUND im MAMbo – Museo d´Arte Contemporanea in Bologna - Pandemie bedingt mit einem Jahr Verspätung - gezeigt wurden.
Schon im Eingangsbereich empfängt den Besucher die Wandzeichnung MAKE ANOTHER EXHIBITION IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO > die – und das könnte man fast schon als “visionär” bezeichnen - vor der Pandemie entstanden ist und auch als Kommentar zu den durch Schliessungen betroffenen Kultur- und Kunstinstitutionen zusammen mit allen damit einhergehenden Kollateralschäden gelesen werden kann.
Als nächstes folgt die Neon-Arbeit CONTAINING A BUILDING CONTAINING
ROOMS CONTAINING DRAWINGS die mit der zweiten, im Hauptraum präsentierten Arbeit GO TO WORK TO BE ABLE TO BUY A CAR TO BE ABLE TO schon auf AG´s Fokusierung auf die Beziehung von Menschen mit ihrer Umgebung sowie die physische- wie symbolische Infrastruktur des sozialen Raumes hinweist.
Aldo Giannotti ist in erster Linie ein präziser, intelligenter und gewitzter Beobachter, Kommentator und Aktionist in Bezug auf den ihn tangierenden Umraum.
Dabei spielt die Zeichnung als vorrangiges Instrument zur visuellen Übermittlung konzeptueller Inhalte im Kontext der geplanten Publikation oder der Ausstellungsadaption eine zentrale Rolle. Mir hat Aldo einmal erzählt, dass er schon als Kind zs. mit einem Freund Spiele zum eigenen Vergnügen erfunden hat – schätze, das war dann wohl ausschlaggebend für seine weitere Zukunft- Die Zeichnungen Aldo Giannotti´s dienen als Anleitung sozialplastischer Konzepte, die mittels performativer Aufführung, Installation oder skulpturaler Gestaltung auf Widerständigkeit und Potential überprüft werden. Mit dem Stilmittel von Wort-loops also Wortwiederholungen kommentiert, hinterfragt und verstärkt Giannotti kritisch aber wohlwollend gewisse eingelernten, sozialen Gewohnheiten, Automatismen und Interdependenzen.
Auf diese immer wiederkehrenden Regelmässigkeiten und der damit einhergehenden Gefahr von unreflektierten Gewohnheiten spielt auch das Video ON AND ON an.
In AG´s breit angelegter Serie der sg Räumliche Veranlagungen (Spatial Dispositions) kann man auch sämtliche grossformatigen Zeichnungen im Hauptraum verorten, wo ua Konzepte – oder konzeptuelle Möglichkeiten – für installative Performances oder Publikationen gezeigt werden, welche der Künstler zuvor schon für verschiedenste Kunsteinrichtungen in Österreich (ALBERTINA Wien, Kunsthaus Graz oder das LENTOS Kunstmuseum Linz) ausgearbeitet hat und dann 2021 international fortsetzte wie bspw. mittels der installativen Performance “The Grandstand” im Kunstpavillon München, wo im Ausstellungsraum lediglich eine Tribüne mit 36 Stühlen aufgebaut wurde: Mit der an eine Wand gemalten Anweisung Sit on this tribune and consider everything you see as a staged performance” macht AG die geneigten Ausstellungsbesucher*innen auf das blosse Schon-Vorhandensein räumlicher Gegebenheiten oder Situationen aufmerksam und gleichsam zu Protagonist*innen.
Eine weitere derartige Ausstellungskonzeption war dann heuer unter dem Titel “Performing the Museum” im Radvila Palace Museum of Art, in Vilnius zu erleben.
Oder danach unter demselben Ausstellungstitel im MUMOK in Wien, wo Schauspieler*innen als Museumsaufseher*innen verkleidet waren und in ungewohnter Art u. Weise mit den Ausstellungsbesucher*innen interagierten - diesen etwa ungefragt Kunstwerke erklärten, Handlungsanweisungen gaben oder sich auch nur zwanglos auf dem Boden entspannten - dh sie verliessen scheinbar für Momente ihr rigides, eintöniges Aufpasser*innen-Korsett und mutierten zu selbst-bestimmten Individuen.
Abschliessen möchte ich mit einem Satz aus Giorgio Palma´s Textbeitrag im aktuellen Katalogbuch WELCOME AND GOODBYE: „Die Fähigkeit, Dinge missbräuchlich zu benutzen, mit ihnen zu spielen und sich gegebenenfalls darüber lustig zu machen, ist nur eine Frage der Fantasie.“
In diesem Sinn dürfen wir uns künftig noch auf weitere gewitzte Genie-Streiche aus dem schier unerschöpflichen Giannotti´schen Universum freuen …

I would like to welcome you to this “museum-like exhibition” ON AND ON by AG in the truest sense of the word, because all the works presented here were shown this year in AG's large personale SAFE AND SOUND in the MAMbo - Museo d´Arte
Contemporanea in Bologna - due to the pandemic, with a year delay.The wall drawing greets the visitor in the entrance area MAKE ANOTHER EXHIBITION IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO> which - and that could almost be described as “visionary” - was created before the pandemic and can also be read as a commentary on the cultural and art institutions affected by closings, along with all the collateral damage associated with COVID-19.
Next comes the neon work CONTAINING A BUILDING CONTAINING ROOMS CONTAINING DRAWINGS, which together with the second neon work in the big room GO TO WORK TO BE ABLE TO BUY A CAR TO BE ABLE TO already points on AG's focus on the relationship between people and their environment as well as the physical and symbolic infrastructure of the social space.
Aldo Giannotti is first and foremost a precise, intelligent and shrewd observer, commentator and activist in relation to the surrounding area that affects him.
The drawing plays a central role as the primary instrument for the visual transmission of conceptual content in the context of the planned publication or exhibition adaptation. Aldo once told me that even as a child together with a friend they would invent games for pure pleasure - I guess that was decisive for his future vocation - Aldo Giannotti's drawings serve as a guide to socio-plastic concepts, which are checked for resistance and potential by means of performance, installation or sculptural design. Using the stylistic device of word loops, Giannotti comments on, questions and reinforces certain learned social habits, automatisms and interdependencies critically but benevolently.
The video ON AND ON alludes to these recurring regularities and the associated risk of unreflected habits.
In AG's broad series of so-called Spatial Dispositions, you can also locate all large- format drawings in the main room, where concepts - or conceptual possibilities - for installation performances or publications are shown that the artist has previously used for various art institutions in Austria (such as the ALBERTINA Vienna, Kunsthaus Graz or the LENTOS Kunstmuseum Linz) and then continued internationally in 2021, for example by means of the installation performance “The Grandstand” in the Munich Art Pavilion, where only a grandstand with 36 chairs was set up in the exhibition space: with the wall painted instruction “Sit on this tribune and consider everything you see as a staged performance”, AG makes the inclined exhibition visitors aware of the mere pre-existence of spatial conditions or situations and, as it were, protagonists.
Another such exhibition concept could then be experienced this year under the title “Performing the Museum” in the Radvila Palace Museum of Art in Vilnius.
Or then under the same exhibition title at MUMOK in Vienna, where actors were disguised as museum overseers and interacted with the exhibition visitors in an unusual way - for example, explaining works of art to them without being asked, giving instructions or simply lying on the floor casually relaxed - that is, they apparently left their rigid, monotonous corset of watchdogs for a moment and mutated into self-determined individuals.
I would like to conclude with a sentence from Giorgio Palma's text in the current catalog book WELCOME AND GOODBYE: "The ability to abuse things, to play with them and, if necessary, to make fun of them, is only a question of the imagination."
With this in mind, we can look forward to more witty genius tricks from the inexhaustible Giannotti universe ...
